Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI examinations have become a widely used imaging tool and routinely prescribed procedure in clinical radiology.

Although MRI examinations are typical diagnostic examinations performed in a Radiology Department, they do not use x-ray radiation. So the MRI is considered to be a safe, radiological procedure.

The combination of a powerful magnet and the steep rising flanks of the radio frequency used for the production of clinical images proved to be relatively safe, and the theoretical safety concern over tissue heating caused by the radiofrequency pulses did not cause any real or practical biological hazard.

However, people who have implanted medical devices such as heart pacemakers or metal clips in the brain or inner ear implants can not undergo MRI procedure. This is due to the possible interference with the functionality of the implanted devices and the magnetic force pull on the metallic parts of these devices.

Any metallic object will also produce severe image artifacts which could obscure valuable and useful details.

The American College of Radiology, ACR, has initiated a voluntary MRI accreditation program and developed specific standards related to MR Imaging.
